While I have already taken you through some very interesting sights of Brno there is more to find out on both visiting and recommended places to eat.
The main square in Brno is called Freedom Square (Náměstí Svobody). From here you are connected with all the other squares and areas important to visit. This square is filled with coffee shops, boutiques, many fashion stores and of course, a lot of restaurants. On this later on.
Finishing with what I do recommend to visit in Brno:
Apart from the Botanical Garden, which seemed to be closed when I arrived, maybe because it is winter time, I always visit the Zoo in the places I go; that is if there is a zoo and if it really worth visiting it.
This time around, I took one-half of the day to visit the zoo, as I know I like to watch the beautiful animals. Well, yeah they were beautiful, but some of them especially the big animals like tigers and bears seemed so sad … I do not know, I just felt like this looking at their face. Anyhow, it is also known for keeping endangered species and conserve them, so yeah; it does do great things for animals as well. For example – it has a polar bear breeding programme, and maybe this was why I could not see the polar bears anywhere. Maybe they were inside.
Anyhow, I did well that I chose to give half a day to the zoo as it is actually on a hill…and you keep going up and down and up again .. It is quite tiring. After visiting only a third of it, I took a place at its Tiger Restaurant to refresh and rest a little bit. This restaurant is named like this as it is built next to the tiger’s place and you can actually see the tiger through the window passing by when you drink something. It is an interesting experience but I would not call it fun, as he seemed so sad….
The total Zoo has 41 hectares and is located on the Moravian part of Brno. It has more than 60 years since it was first opened and it has been growing ever since. For every species, they have details on the family and the newborn babies. Unfortunately, this information is in Czech and I could only understand the species and the date the pup was born.
It has a beautiful family of brown bears, which I saw; many Wolverines, which look great; a family of lions; tigers – a male one and a female one, which loved separately; they also have very beautiful and different species of owls – I don’t remember to have seen so many species of owls anywhere; they have some cat species animals, which have a very sweet face, but it is shown on the board that they are dangerous. And like any zoo, they also have their zebras, giraffes, mousses, reptiles, birds and fox. Unfortunately, I did not see the fox and the giraffe either.
All in all, it is a great place to spend your day and to relax. However, make sure you do some pit stops and have something to drink on you, or at least stop by the restaurants it offers, as it is quite tiring to walk through it all.
Apart from the above I visited Brno shopping area and enjoyed its little and narrow streets.
Restaurants to eat
I tried quite a few restaurants there, some of which I tried various times as the food was great and the offer was wide, so I had what to choose from. I even discovered my fav meal from the Czech Republic – as I have also tried it in Karlovy Vary – green beans with bacon and garlic. I chose this sidedish wherever they had it on the menu.
What I liked a lot about the restaurants is that most people understood and spoke English, which Is quite nice as you can get along better with them this way. Of course, there were a couple of restaurants where they did not know, but the majority did know.
Butcher’s Grill and Pasta
This is a great restaurant, which actually intends to be a Mexican cuisine one if I can say it like that.
Very fancy, a great and intimate location, rather expensive but not too expensive. However, the service, the food, the way they talk to you, the location totally worth it. I liked it also because everyone minds their own business, no one really talked too loud, like you can hear in other restaurants, you can have a nice conversation at the table without screaming to the person you are with, so yeah, a totally go to a restaurant. It will make you just enjoy every bite you take.
The food was great. Before they bring you the food even though you do not order an appetizer, they bring some bread and pate as an appetizer. Both good as well. I had salmon with baked potato sprinkled with cream and bacon. It was a total dream.
I have heard there are actually two restaurants like this in Brno, but I have been to the one in the city centre near a church.
The food here is great, I had some pork spare ribs and they brought along with them some bread sparkled with garlic and olive oil and maybe put in the oven for a little bit. It tasted wonderful. The service is rather slow as it was quite busy but the food and the beer here are very tasty. Actually, the beer in the Czech Republic has a totally different taste than the one I am used with. A go-to restaurant for sure.
This is located right near the Church of Saint James. It is quite a fancy restaurant in the idea that it serves small portions of food and for everything extra you need – like bread at the soup, you need to order. That seemed weird in comparison to the other restaurants I’ve been to.
I can also say that for its looks I expected better food. For me the food was undercooked and as well the menu was not very vast, and you did not actually have what to choose from. Apart from this, the way they had their menu translated from Czech to English, did not correspond to the food you were getting, I mean not totally.
The service was ok, the girls there tried to be friendly an offer and say their opinion on foods and their recommendations, but I guess they did not cook as I like the food to be cooked. A no-no restaurant – maybe a go –to bar, as I saw some people just came here to have drinks, a lot, wine.
The Three Devils
This is a great “pub” let’s say, which was very full. It is located in downtown but on one of the narrow streets.
The service was great, people friendly and though some did not understand English I tried to find the words in Czech for what I needed, and it was kinda’ fun. I had a great goulash here – which is totally different from the Hungarian Goulash – I think they also have their own goulash recipe. I kinda’ like it better than the Hungarian as it does not have that small dimples on it. (which I leave aside and don’t eat). A go-to restaurant in Brno.
La Patas Pizzeria and Restaurant
Being to all those Czech specific restaurants made me want to try something that was less Czech let’s say. Even though they also had traditional Czech dishes.
I went here twice as the menu was very diversified and the food was great. They brought along with the soup a special bread made with chimen and sprinkled with cheese. Though the other food like the beans and the salmon and the chicken tasted great as well, what I loved most about this restaurant was the bread. And I do not eat that much bread, but I did eat a lot here. It was great. A go-to restaurant in Brno if you are really hungry and want something good.
This was a total disaster I can say. I do not know what – the fact that there were no clients there, the fact that this is how they were trained, but the service was terrible. Girls there always came to ask you something, or to see if you finished, or watch you eat while they passed by, they were suffocating.
The food was not great either. It was not bad, but not as I expected. So Volcano is a no-no on the restaurant’s list in Brno.
My experience in Brno was great overall. I tried new things, I saw a different culture, people I liked, the cuisine I liked and had a great time just exploring the city streets. It is one of those cities I’ve been where I have felt good and myself.
