Corsica is the neighbor of Sardinia. It is a mountain area island where the heights get up to 2700 meters. Just in the eastern part one can see a fertile plain, as the rest of the ground is bad. It is known as the “Island of the beauty”.
It is the 3rd island as far as the size concerns from the Mediterranean Sea. Corsica is more an Italian land, both culturally as well as geographical. The easiest way to get here is by plane, as there are 4 major airports – Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari, but one can as well get here by harbor with the Ferry.
One of the cities here is Ajaccio. This is the birth place of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was founded by the Geneva people in 1500 and it is the biggest city from this island. Here you can find the memorial house of Napoleon Bonaparte which is a museum. Here he used to live till he was 7 years old. He was christened here at the local cathedral. The Cathédrale de l’Assomption de Sainte-Marie is built in baroque style and it houses some important paintings signed by Tinoretto and Delacroix.
Near the touristic harbor one will see the Piazza Foch, with its many palmers, Napoleon statue, cornered on each side by some lions statues. Citadella is located not far from the harbor and it has an alee for walking near it and along it a long, smooth sand beach. The beach is quiet large and it is bordered by many palm trees. It is a quiet and beautiful beach, a perfect place for relaxation.
Another place to visit is the Fesh Museum. It is located on the rue Cardinal Fesh. This cardinal was the uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte. It houses a private collection of oeuvres d’art signed by Tizian or Botticelli. Near it one can see the library which houses a total number of 50.000 books. The De Gaulle square is another Piazzetta that one can visit and enjoy the relaxing moments. Enjoy!
