Thinking about Istanbul opens your mind just to warm weather, sun and beach. Anyhow, this is not all that there is to it. You may as well think of the bluish color of Istanbul waters, the ships, the women wearing scarves around their head, men with big and black beards, minarets. There are as well those that just want to feel relaxation when going to Istanbul and this is a choice they make when they look for relaxation.
On the shore of the Golden Corn – one can have those moments of relaxation that one so long longs for. It is a little gulf that splits the European part in two. As it is a touristic harbor you can climb on a cruise ship and it will take you to the middle of the town. Being there you will see both shores without actually being on neither of them. When the cruise is over you will see the New Mosque, lighted and silent having two or three believers that wash their hands and their feet at the place found in the interior garden of the mosque. After this, they are ready for making their prayers. The Galata Bridge can be seen right in front of you, where you will see many fishermen and farther behind the Galata Tower, the next touristic stop.
Moving forward, one will be able to see Yerebatan Sarnici. This place is known as the Sunk Palace as well. It is more impressive than the harem from the Topkapi Palace or the interior of the Blue Mosque. At 500 meters away from the Hagia Sophia Minarets, one can enter the world below. You just go down and you get to the woods. In the marble columns forests you can see an underground cathedral. Everywhere you look you will see 9 meters high columns and some stone birds between each of them. At their base, a few centimeters of water and in water some craps. There is light, but not as much as to take the mystery off.
The main attraction of this place is the two columns whose bases have a Meduza head sculpted. One of the heads is rotated at 90 degrees while the other at 180 degrees. The legend says that its role is to protect the great construction and it will turn to stone any person that wanted to harm the building.
The Yerebatan Sarnici is not the only place from Istanbul like this, as there are more – as the Theodosius Place and the Binbidirek one. Enjoy!
